  • Assist veterinary surgeon in veterinary procedures including anaesthetics and surgical operations.
  • Administer treatments (e.g. injections, medication, fluid therapy, dressing, first aid, euthanasia) as directed by the veterinary surgeon and where permitted, undertake minor surgical procedures.
  • Nurse and care for patients to the standard upheld by Village Vets.
  • Undertake general cleaning duties throughout the clinic including equipment, animal quarters to a level acceptable to the Village Vets standards.
  • Ensure medications prescribed are correctly administered to patients, oversee the safe handling of drugs and maintain up to date and accurate clinical records
  • Assist with front of house duties and understand procedures involved in maintaining an efficient friendly reception.
  • Maintain an account of stock ensuring usage within shelf life in order to prevent wastage of stock.
  • Provide appropriate veterinary training to all staff in order to assist with best practice measures.
  • Promote the Pet Health Plans and Pet Insurance to all clients to facilitate the highest level of veterinary care.
  • Carry out any ad hoc Veterinary or administrative duties that may arise through the normal course of the day within the clinic or as advised by head nurse/area manager.
  • Complete all tasks, duties and procedures efficiently and accurately.
  • Be responsible for creating and maintaining an outstanding client experience throughout the whole team.
While at work all staff are required to take care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts and omissions & co-operate with Village Vets policies and procedures. Knowledge & Skills

Job description: Veterinary Surgeon  Location: Village Vets Ashbourne, Meath Reports to: Lead Vet  Salary: €55,000 - €70,000 Per Annum DOE  We’re thrilled to share that the Ashbourne Clinic team is growing in Village Vets! As part of our continued commitment to excellent patient care and team development, we are currently seeking a GP Vet to join our dedicated and supportive team. The right candidate we are looking for is 3 years plus experience and competent in medicine and surgical skills. Our Ashbourne branch joined the Village Vets family in 2008 and we moved to our shiny new site in 2024. We’re well equipped with modern facilities including an in-house laboratory, diagnostic equipment such as x-rays, dental x-rays and ultrasonography, two large surgery theatres, four consult rooms and separate dog and cat wards. We’re passionate about fear-free techniques to help make every one of our patients’ visits as comfortable as possible. The clinic is conveniently located in the centre of Ashbourne with free parking available all day. Our Ashbourne clinic operates as an emergency clinic from 8PM to 8AM daily, to serve both internal and external clients. Our ideal candidate will have a strong desire to work in a small animal practice, have a big interest in medicine and be highly motivated, hard-working, and a team player. In Village Vets we strive to provide the best standard of care to our patients and the best service to our clients.   • Diagnose, treat and care for all patients to the standard upheld by Village Vets
  • Investigate and treat cases within the practice as completely as possible within the practice before referring, according to the needs of the patient
  • Assume full responsibility for patients, ensuring that care after-hours or after referral is appropriate and of the highest standard, and that handover of cases is done effectively
  • Keep medical records up to date and accurate
  • Prescribe and dispense medications correctly and safely, and help maintain adequate stock levels
  • Communicate effectively with clients, giving estimates and relevant information on diagnostics and treatment plans to allow informed decision-making regarding treatment.
  • Provide and maintain an outstanding client experience throughout the whole practice across all mediums (face-to-face, phone, email, social media, website etc.)
  • Promote the Pet Health Plans and Pet Insurance to all clients to facilitate the highest level of veterinary care.
  • Communicate effectively with the team in the clinic to ensure patients and clients are treated with the highest level of care and compassion, to the standard upheld by Village Vets
  • Provide appropriate veterinary training to all staff in order to assist with best practice measures.

  • Ensure that all bills are priced correctly
  • Maintain membership of the VCI and be familiar with the legislation affecting the practice of veterinary medicine in Ireland.

We are looking for an experienced Lead Veterinary Surgeon to come and join our team of highly skilled vets and nurses at our veterinary clinic in Coolock. Our Coolock branch joined as a proud member of the Village Vets family in 2016 and is situated inside the Maxi Zoo pet shop. We have two consulting rooms, separate dog and cat wards, a surgical theatre, diagnostic facilities including an x-ray room, and a dental room. We have a light and comfortable reception area, and we’re passionate about fear-free techniques to help make every one of our patients’ visits to see us as comfortable as possible. Summary of Job Purpose and Function The Lead Veterinary Surgeon role is a key role in the Village Vets leadership team, and has overarching responsibility for the holistic performance of the clinic and team under their leadership. This is an exciting role, with autonomy in clinic leadership, to ensure that their team delivers the highest quality of patient care, alongside first class customer service and high team engagement. Reporting to the Regional Director, this role has responsibility for delivering the business plan for the clinic working alongside other business partner functions. As a Veterinary Surgeon, they will primarily perform clinical duties in accordance with the standards and values upheld by Village Vets & the Veterinary Council of Ireland.   Leadership: ● Be an ambassador for Village Vets, demonstrating the values and principles of the company both internally and externally ● Lead the clinic team with a positive mindset, providing coaching and mentoring support to direct reports and the wider team, with the support of business partners, building positive relationships at all levels ● Be a clear and motivational communicator to the clinic team and Village Vets more widely and lead on communicating internal clinical, operational and group messages to the team through regular meetings, providing relevant feedback to the CST/AM where appropriate ● Work collaboratively with operational, medical and other support functions to set the strategic direction of the clinic within the wider Village Vets strategy ● Actively promote equality, diversity and inclusion, recognising and celebrating best practice and achievements within the team   Clinical responsibilities: ● Be the named person for PAS Accreditation for the clinic, and lead on ensuring compliance with the VCI COS regulations ● Demonstrate sound clinical judgement, and lead the team in clinical best practice to promote the importance of excellent clinical work ● Ensure clinical compliance with new initiatives, protocols and purchasing ● Through line management of the veterinary team, identify development needs and provide or coordinate clinical mentorship to ensure clinical best practice and individual vet career progression, working with the CST ● Support the Head RVN in ensuring the nursing and ACA teams deliver exceptional care as a key part of the clinical team ● Promote preventative healthcare (to include but not limited to vaccinations, parasite prevention, PHP and Pet Insurance etc) to all clients to facilitate the highest level of veterinary care ● Lead on a culture of valuing the clinical work delivered by the team, to ensure transparency around the cost of clinical work, estimating, and accurate billing   Operational responsibilities: ● Working with the Regional Director and business partners, play a key role in the development of the annual business plan for the clinic, and then lead on the delivery of this plan, across quality, people, client and commercial sustainability ● Be accountable at clinic level for achieving and surpassing yearly and monthly clinic targets across the Profit and Loss account, and broadly across Key Performance Indicators ● Work with the Regional Director to report on the clinic performance on a monthly basis ● Lead on ensuring clinic compliance with any new operational initiatives and protocols ● Lead on team engagement, ensuring all team members have an effective relationship with their line manager, to facilitate a culture of feedback and development, with psychological safety at its core, and thereby driving retention This list is not exhaustive, and there may be additional leadership duties required to ensure the effective running of the clinic.
