Job description: Veterinary Nurse (RVN)

New graduate nurses as well as experienced nurses

Location: Village Vets

Reports to: Head Nurse & Lead Vet

Salary: Up to €35,000 DOE

 

We are looking for a motivated and compassionate Veterinary Nurse to join our friendly and supportive team at Village Vets Stillorgan. We welcome applications from new graduate nurses as well as experienced nurses looking for their next opportunity. Our ideal candidate will be confident in all aspects of nursing, including anaesthesia monitoring, inpatient care, and client communication, and will have a desire to continue developing these skills further.

Our clinic has recently expanded to a five-vet team with cert-holders in various disciplines. We pride ourselves on excellent patient care, with daily rounds and regular VetSafe team meetings. Case continuity and thorough medicine workups are a priority, and you’ll play a key role in supporting this process. You’ll work alongside experienced vets, other nurses, and ACAs in a close-knit team that values support, teamwork, and evidence-based veterinary medicine to achieve the best outcomes for our patients.

We’re equipped with the latest technology, including a new ultrasound machine, dental radiography (CR7), DR radiography, AI imaging technologies (for urinalysis and cytology), and in-house blood machines—giving you the tools to deliver exceptional care.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist veterinary surgeon in veterinary procedures including anaesthetics and surgical operations.
  • Administer treatments (e.g. injections, medication, fluid therapy, dressing, first aid, euthanasia) as directed by the veterinary surgeon and where permitted, undertake minor surgical procedures.
  • Nurse and care for patients to the standard upheld by Village Vets.
  • Undertake general cleaning duties throughout the clinic including equipment, animal quarters to a level acceptable to the Village Vets standards.
  • Ensure medications prescribed are correctly administered to patients, oversee the safe handling of drugs and maintain up to date and accurate clinical records
  • Assist with front of house duties and understand procedures involved in maintaining an efficient friendly reception.
  • Maintain an account of stock ensuring usage within shelf life in order to prevent wastage of stock.
  • Provide appropriate veterinary training to all staff in order to assist with best practice measures.
  • Promote the Pet Health Plans and Pet Insurance to all clients to facilitate the highest level of veterinary care.
  • Carry out any ad hoc Veterinary or administrative duties that may arise through the normal course of the day within the clinic or as advised by head nurse/lead vet.
  • Complete all tasks, duties and procedures efficiently and accurately.
  • Be responsible for creating and maintaining an outstanding client experience throughout the whole team.

 

While at work all staff are required to take care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts and omissions & co-operate with Village Vets policies and procedures.

 

Knowledge & Skills

 

Specification for a Veterinary Nurse

Criteria Essential Desirable
Professional/Technical Qualification Current registration with VCI

2+ years’ experience as an RVN in a small animal clinic

Further qualification specific to VN training
Skills & Competencies Excellent communication skills (written & oral).

Ability to work well in fast paced environment.

Excellent time management

Ability to make clinical decisions.

Ability to work autonomously.

Confident and competent decision-making skills.

Ability to provide training and direction to other.

Ability to work in team.

Personal Qualities Excellent standard of personal presentation.
