Dog and Cat Vaccinations: Why Is Vaccinating Your Pet So Important? | Village Vets

All the vets around the world will tell you how important it is for a pet owner to know about vaccination. Pet vaccination will play a key role in ensuring that your pet is healthy and immune to diseases. Vaccinating your pet will also prevent the spread of diseases like rabies, and more to your family.

Vaccinations have proven to prevent the deaths of millions of dogs, cats, and other animals within the last few decades. Pet vaccination will also prevent the commonly found pet diseases and also help you avoid all the costly treatments for animal illnesses that were preventable. These pet vaccinations will protect your lovable pet from a lot of diseases that normally affect wildlife, particularly distemper and rabies.

What should you choose - To vaccinate? Or not vaccinate?

A lot of people ask should they get their dog vaccinated or not? The main part of the problem lies in the question itself. Not vaccinating your pets is not an option. Instead, you should be looking for the best ways to get your pets vaccinated.

Skipping vaccines is not at all a wise choice as they protect your pets against deadly diseases. The unvaccinated pets are always at a greater risk of coming in contact with deadly diseases and spreading them to other pets or even humans. The diseases that are considered rare can once again become common if you choose not to get your pets vaccinated.

How should you get your pet vaccinated properly?

Vaccines are meant for preventing illness as it enables the immune system to create a strong defence against diseases. The vaccines come with disease antigens which can stimulate the immune system without actually infecting the pets. After that, the immune system automatically creates antibodies for fighting off the real diseases in case your pet is exposed to it.

Some years back, the standard practice was for the young puppies and kittens to be vaccinated multiple times and then adults to be moved to an adult vaccination schedule. However, with the newer guidelines that were set in 2011 and later updated in 2017, it is stated that the core vaccines need to be given to adult dogs or cats annually or at intervals of three years. Of course, vaccination for puppies and kittens will still be performed every three weeks between the ages of six and sixteen months. A lot of vets have already adjusted their protocols in order to follow the three-year schedule set by AAHA. Certain non-core vaccines have been recommended annually for adult cats and dogs.
